Where it can — and can't — go
The wood fire coil kit produces an open fire while in use. The tub must be placed on a non-combustible surface: compacted cracker dust, gravel, concrete, stone pavers, natural earth, or slate. It cannot be placed on a timber deck, decking timber, decking composite, artificial turf, or any combustible surface, without proper fire-resistant base and container. See the Setup section below for fire-clearance distances.
How they ship These are real industrial galvanised tanks, manufactured in the US and imported nested — stacked inside one another like cups — to keep freight costs (and your price) honest. Nesting means diameter can vary by up to ±2cm from the listed width and length. It's standard for tanks of this build and doesn't affect strength, the fit of the pump or cover, or anything you'll notice once you're in the water.
Nesting and freight can also leave minor scuffs or surface marks on the steel. These tanks were built for paddocks, not display floors — small marks are part of the product, don't affect strength or longevity, and stop being noticeable once the tank's set up and full.

5. Setup
Pick a level, non-combustible spot — gravel, pavers, concrete, or compacted earth. Fit the coil, fill from a garden hose, light a small fire, and the water heats over 3–4 hours.
6. Soak
You're done. Most customers tell us they use it most in autumn and winter — exactly when other backyard products go quiet.

1. Pick the right spot (this is the rule that matters)
The wood fire coil kit produces an open fire during use. The tub must sit on a non-combustible base. Safe surfaces: compacted cracker dust, gravel, concrete, stone pavers, natural earth, or slate. Do not place the tub on a timber deck, decking composite, artificial turf, or any combustible surface.
Industry guidance for clearance:
- At least 3m clear from main structures (house walls, pergolas, sheds)
- Boundary setbacks vary by council. If you're siting it near a boundary, confirm your local council's setback before you light.
- Chimney at least 3m from flammable material (eaves, vegetation, washing lines)
If you live in a wood-smoke-restricted council area, check local restrictions before lighting.
2. Position the tub (15 minutes, 2 people)
Lift the tub onto your chosen base. Pre-drilled holes go on the side closest to where the coil will sit. Make sure the base is level — water finds the low side.
3. Fit the wood fire coil kit (about 30 minutes)
Connect the coil to the pre-drilled tub ports per the included guide. The coil sits external to the tub and connects with two short pipes.
4. Fill the tub (60–90 minutes, hands-off)
A standard garden hose is all you need. Fill to a comfortable bathing level (~550L for 2 adults).
5. Light the fire and heat the water (3–4 hours from cold)
Start with a small fire of dry, seasoned hardwood. The coil heats the water by gravity convection — hot water rises out of the coil, cool water flows in. Use the wooden paddle every 20–30 minutes to circulate the tub. Keep the cover on for the entire heat-up. With the cover on you'll typically reach bathing temp (around 38–40°C) in 3–4 hours.
6. Soak, then maintain temperature
Once you're in, a small ongoing fire and the cover (when stepping out for breaks) holds temp comfortably for as long as you want to soak.
7. Drain
Two options. Either siphon the tub out via a garden hose (gravity does the work — start the siphon at the highest point), or site the tub on a base with drainage and use the drain plug at the back of the tub. Pre-warm with a slightly bigger starter fire, keep the cover fully on, and circulate the water with the included paddle every 30 minutes during heat-up.
Once you're at temperature, a smaller ongoing fire will hold heat comfortably for the duration of your soak.

Do not bathe in water above 40°C. Keep soaks short, get out if you feel dizzy, drowsy or unwell, and take extra care with children, older people, pregnant women, anyone with a heart condition, and after drinking alcohol. While the tub is heating, keep clear of the hot-water inlet, the connecting hose, the coil and the chimney, which all get very hot.

Fire safety and where to put it
The coil burns an open fire while it is running, so treat it exactly like a backyard fire pit or pizza oven.
This is an off-grid tub you fill, heat, soak in and empty, the same way you'd use an outdoor bath. Because it's filled and emptied for each use, some councils treat it as an outdoor bath (no pool fence), while others treat any tub that can hold more than 300mm of water as a spa.
Requirements vary by state and council, so confirm with your local council before you install. The UV cover we supply keeps the water clean; it is not a certified child-resistant safety cover. It is the owner's responsibility to confirm and comply.

The only exception is if you later add a powered pump, or place the tub within 1.25m of a power point or garden light. Two options:
1. Siphon it out. Run a standard garden hose from inside the tub to a drainage point lower than the tub (a garden bed, gutter, or grate). Start the siphon and gravity does the rest. This is what most customers do.
2. Use the drain plug. The tub has a drain plug at the back. If you site the tub on a base with built-in drainage (a slight slope to a drainage pit, or a paver setup with a gap underneath), you can pull the plug and let it empty.
Refill is straightforward — a standard garden hose to a comfortable bathing depth (~550L for 2 adults) takes 60–90 minutes.

Australia-wide, freezing is rarely an issue.
For most of the country (Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, most of VIC and SA): water sits well above freezing year-round and a tub used at least once a week effectively never freezes. With the cover on, water typically loses 15–18°C per day — so even an unused tub stays well above freezing.
For alpine or sub-zero areas, you have three options:
- Drain fully between soaks (the simplest answer).
- Leave only ~125mm (5 inches) of water in the bottom — a small ice volume can't damage the tub.
- Float a partially inflated inner tube or a couple of sealed empty plastic bottles on the surface — they absorb the expansion if the surface ice forms.
If you're in an alpine zone and bathing weekly, draining is still the cleanest approach. If you're using it less often, the reduced-water + flotation method works.
Fire safety and where to put it
The coil burns an open fire while it is running, so treat it exactly like a backyard fire pit or pizza oven.
For ease, use a ash pan. Empty the ash pan after each session for frequent use, or weekly for occasional use.
Cooled ash is safe to compost or scatter as garden fertiliser — it's high in potassium and good for most non-acid-loving plants.
Periodically check the coil and chimney for tar or soot build-up. Both are signs of damp wood or unsuitable fuel — switch to dry, seasoned hardwood and the build-up disappears.

The exterior of the tub stays comfortable to touch during normal use. The water sits at bathing temperature (around 38–40°C), so the tub walls stay close to that — warm but not painful.
The fire box on the coil kit, by contrast, gets very hot — same as any fire pit or wood-burning appliance. Don't touch the coil housing or chimney while the fire is running or for at least 30 minutes after you've put it out. Treat it the way you'd treat any open fire in your backyard.
The hose through which the warm water enters the tank can also be quite hot so please avoid bathing near that area.
The tub edge can warm up if it's been sitting in direct summer sun for hours with the cover off. If that's a concern, throw a shade sail over it or just keep the cover on between soaks.
Yes. Drain it, disconnect the coil kit, and roll the empty tub to its new spot. The coil kit detaches from the tub via two pipe connections — you don't need to dismantle anything else.
