If you're in Perth and the last fibreglass pool quote came back at $55,000, this is the article for you. A stock tank pool gives you the same backyard summer for a tenth of the cost, sits on a paver pad you can do yourself in a weekend, and suits our climate particularly well. We import these from the US, hold stock at our warehouse in Bibra Lake, and deliver across the Perth metro on Saturdays. This is the local read of the full Australian Stock Tank Pool Guide, written for WA backyards.

Why a stock tank pool suits Perth
Perth has a Mediterranean climate. The summers are long, hot and dry: per the Bureau of Meteorology's climate statistics for Perth, February averages a daily maximum around 31.7Β°C and January is right behind. The warmth often carries into April. Two things about that make stock tank pools land especially well here.
The water heats itself for most of the year. From November through March, an uncovered stock tank pool sits comfortably between 26Β°C and 30Β°C with no heating at all. The cover that ships with every pool holds heat overnight. For a family looking for water that's ready when the kids are home from school, Perth is the closest Australian capital to "set and forget."
Backyards in our gentrification belt are smaller. The 5 to 15 kilometre band around the CBD (Wembley, Subiaco, Mt Lawley, Vic Park, South Perth, East Fremantle, Coolbellup, Spearwood) is full of family homes on blocks that no longer fit a real pool. A 2.4 metre stock tank pool fits in the footprint where the trampoline used to be. A 1.8 metre Urban Plunge fits behind a townhouse.

A WA install: what the pad looks like
The pool needs a flat, stable base that holds at least 100 kPa of bearing capacity and stays level within 5 millimetres across its footprint. Three install paths cover almost every Perth customer.
Cracker dust or sand pad (DIY). The most common Perth DIY install. Cracker dust is sold at every metro landscape supplier, typically $60 to $80 per cubic metre. Materials, delivery and a hire plate compactor for the day land around $200 to $400 all in. A weekend's work.

Pavers over a compacted base. The neatest finish. If you already have a paved area in the right spot, you're done. If you're laying new pavers, $50 to $150 per square metre installed.
Small concrete slab. A 7 to 10 square metre residential slab, 100 millimetres thick, runs around $700 to $1,500 in Perth. Lasts decades.
What the cert does not allow: bare lawn, loose earth, or any surface that flexes under the pool's filled weight (around 2,700 kg for the Family Plunge). Freestanding jarrah decks alongside the pool are fine. The pool just doesn't sit on the deck. The deck sits on its own footings.
WA council, permits and pool fencing
In Western Australia, any pool holding water more than 300 millimetres deep must have a compliant pool safety barrier under AS 1926.1-2012 (per the WA Government Building and Energy guidance). Our pools hold 610 millimetres. They are swimming pools under WA law. They need a compliant pool barrier and council registration.
Most homeowners lodge a BA2 (Application for Building Permit, Uncertified) with their local council, accompanied by the supplied engineering certificate, the product sheet, a site plan and an elevation plan. Building permit fees start at $171.65.
We've written a dedicated guide for the WA permit process: Do You Need a Permit for a Stock Tank Pool in WA?. The short version: yes for the round pools, no for the smaller Off-Grid Wood Fired Hot Tub, and the process is straightforward when you walk in with the right documents on day one.
What we provide for your application: the signed engineering certificate, the manufacturer product sheet, and standard installation drawings.
Running cost through a Perth year
Real numbers from the customer base.
- Chlorine: around $54 per year on the minimum-effective chlorine protocol, using Hy-Clor 600 g tablets from Bunnings ($30.90 per pack, ~15 tablets per pack confirmed from field count).
- Electricity: the Intex pump draws around 380 W and runs one to two hours a day in summer. At Perth residential rates (around $0.32 per kWh), that's $3.50 to $7.50 per month in summer. Less in winter.
- Water: a single refill of 2,650 L (Family Plunge) costs about $5 to $15 depending on your usage tier. Most Perth households refill once a year before summer.
- Pool barrier: if you don't have one, expect $1,500 to $4,000 installed. The line item that catches most first-time owners.
